Carya Golf Club, Turkey
Carya
Golf Club, a heathland inspired golf course on Turkey's
Mediterranean coast, opened for play in November 2008.
Designed
by Thomson Perrett & Lobb, the international five times
Open Champion Peter Thomson, Carya Golf Club is a striking
and naturally beautiful golf course set on undulating sand
hills in Belek, near Antalya.
Inspired
by classic heathland courses such as Sunningdale and The
Berkshire, nearly one million heather sprigs have been planted
around Carya Golf Club, on the tops of bunkers and framing
holes, giving the course its distinct appearance. In a first-of-its-kind
project, all of the heather was propagated on site in specially
constructed glasshouses.
"Carya
Golf Club is an extraordinary golf course, built on an exceptional
piece of land," says Peter Thomson, who first visited
the site with partner Tim Lobb in 2006.
"We
immediately realised the potential for an outstanding layout
and a golf course that would be unique to the region. Although
it is just a few hundred yards from the beach, the terrain
is reminiscent of the classic heathland courses near London
that I rate among the world's best, and which I enjoyed
much success on as a player - and this was the vision that
inspired the design for Carya Golf Club."
The
newly propagated heather sprigs are establishing themselves
onsite strongly and it is anticipated that in time they
will establish themselves and carpet areas of the course.
Where the heather is most striking is on the backs of bunkers.
With pine trees lining the holes and sandy soil underfoot,
there are moments when the golfer could really think they
were back on the traditional courses of Surrey or Berkshire.
Carya
Golf Club has been designed to be enjoyed by all golfers.
The free flowing holes run between pine and eucalyptus trees
and across a dramatic sand ridge. From the Championship
tees, the 7,186 yard (6,570 metres), par 72 course, is a
demanding test of golfing strategy - while tourists playing
from the Regular tees (6,366 yards / 5,821 metres) will
appreciate the generous fairways and enjoyable approaches.
Carya
Golf Club has also opened a luxurious new clubhouse to welcome
international visitors, plus a state-of-the-art golf academy,
driving range and short course.
